TLT hosts a Live Talk Show: How Bangladeshi and overseas Bangladeshi library professionals are responding to the COVID-19 situation?

The Librarian Times hosted a live talk show titled how Bangladeshi and overseas Bangladeshi library professionals are responding to the COVID-19 situation on August 8 2020. The talk show focused on how the outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has a global impact which affects libraries over the world. The guest speakers addressed about how the libraries across the globe have been facing difficulties on which programs to deliver and how ranging from limited constraints to total closure. Besides, the speakers’ talked about the libraries initiatives to overcome the challenges of managing remote working effectively. The objective of the talk show was to identify how Bangladeshi and overseas Bangladeshi LIS professionals are involved in delivering library services, especially in Australia, Singapore and India at the time of COVID-19.

The special guests who attended the live talk show were Nargis Sultana, Wyndham City Council, Australia; Razina Akhter, Bangladesh Shishu (Children) Academy, Md. Anwarul Islam, PhD, Library Association of Bangladesh; Abdullah al-Modabber, South Asian University, India and A N M Sabbir, Charles Sturt University NSW, Australia. The event was moderated by Syeda Mukta Begum, Singapore.

While the coronavirus pandemic continues to endanger and interrupt lives, publishers in all industries are working hard to make sure readers of all ages have a smooth transition experience.

There are special free and extended resources available from various platforms and vendors during the current Pandemic in the world.  On behalf of TLT, Syeda Mukta Begum has collected all the free resources links to share with LIS professionals, researchers, doctors and others for the remote learning and access in the lockdown period. ACS Publications

Here are enclosed a collection of free to read online teaching chemistry teaching resources from the Journal of Chemical Education and the ACS Division of Chemical Education. There are also virtual issues of all articles related to Covid-19 from ACS Publications: Chemistry in Coronavirus Research: A Free to Read Collection from the American Chemical Society. This regularly updated collection includes journal articles, video resources, distance learning modules, etc.

ULAB Library launches Bangabandhu Corner

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) has launched Bangabandhu corner at the library.

Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam, National Professor of Bangladesh inaugurated Bangabandhu Corner at the Library of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) in its Dhanmondi Campus, Dhaka on March 11, 2020. The initiative has been taken to mark the centenary of the birth of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The new corner at ULAB Library contains a special collection on Bangabandhu with more than 350 books and new titles will be added continuously. Certainly, this collection will help scholars and researchers.

Student exchange program: Malaysian delegates visit the ISLM Department

To explore the possibility of fostering faculty/student exchange program and collaboration between the Department of Information Science and Library Management (ISLM), University of Dhaka, and the Faculty of Information Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia are in a stage to start. This exchange program is aiming to bring together researchers, academicians and LIS students of the University of Dhaka and UiTM to present their research results and academic activities. This platform provides opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas and experiences face to face, to establish research relations and to find further opportunities for future collaboration. Through this reciprocal activity, it is hoped that the staff and students from both institutions would be able to enrich knowledge, get insight into the Bangladeshi and Malaysian educational systems, develop professional individuality and experience life in a foreign land.

An international symposium on “Empowering the Library and Information Professionals for Achieving the SDGs” held at Dhaka University

An International Symposium on “Empowering the Library and Information Professionals for Achieving the SDGs” co-organised by the Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka and the Association of Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) South Asia Chapter was held on 10 February 2020 at Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Dhaka.

In the opening ceremony of the symposium, Professor Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman, Honourable Vice-Chancellor, the University of Dhaka attended as the chief guest. Professor Dr Abu Md. Delwar Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Dhaka attended the event as the special guest. Chairman of the Department of Information Science and Library Management Professor Dr Kazi Mostak Gausul Hoq presided over the inaugural session.

The keynote paper was presented by Dr Samuel K. W. Chu, Associate Professor, Teacher Education and Learning Leadership, Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong. The keynote title was Challenges and Opportunities for Information Professionals to Achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals mainly focused on how Information Professionals can help make an impact on ending poverty, good health and well-being, quality education and innovation.

The Librarian Times celebrates National Library Day 2020

In collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Department of Public Libraries, the Librarian Times celebrated the National Library Day 2020. The event, ‘Porbo Boi Gorbo Desh, Bangabandhur Bangladesh’, consisted of a rally, discussion session and cultural programme.

The National Library Day was first recognised by the government on February 5, 2018, to raise public awareness about libraries.

Md. Ahasan Habib participates the fifty years celebration of OIC in Jeddah, KSA

The Islamic body OIC organised a ceremony on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) from 25-28 November 2019.

Mr Md. Ahasan Habib, Assistant Librarian, Islamic University of Technology (IUT) participated in the programme as of the delegate members. Mr Ahasan Habib met with His Excellency Yousef Bin Ahmad Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Othaimeen, Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at Leylaty Hall, Jeddah. During this tour, he visited Central Library of the OIC Headquarter and discussed with Mr Mohamed Khalil Atta, Library and Information Science Specialist, regarding the library system and services and its collection. The high officials of the OIC headquarters greeted him as well.  

Mr Ahasan is the first-ever library professional who got this opportunity on behalf of IUT.
