Doa Mahfil for Late ADM Ali Ahammed held

Ahasan Dhaka, 24 March 2019

A doa mahfil and commemorative meeting in memory of deceased ADM Ali Ahammed, Vice President of Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB) and Component Lead, Libraries Unlimited Project of British Council, Dhaka was held on 14 March at VIP Seminar Room of Central  Public Library, Shahbag, Dhaka.

Prof. Dr SM Mannan, Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka, Mr Asish Kumar Sarker, Director General, Department of Public Libraries, Mr Syed Ali Akbar, President LAB spoke on the occasion among others.

The event was organized by the LAB. Dr Md. Anwarul Islam, Secretary General of LAB gave the vote for thanks to the professionals for attending the program.

Bishwa Sahitya Kendra started books distribution in Khulna region

Bishwa Sahitya Kendra has expanded its country-wide excellence program to Khulna region this year. The excellence program was started on March 20, 2019, through the distribution of books among the students of St. Josephs High School in Khulna City. The program was organized by BKash, the country’s leading mobile financial services provider. A good number of students participated in the event.

Mr SM Humayun Kabir Tutul, Assistant Librarian, National Health Library and Documentation Centre, Dhaka Organizing Secretary, Medical Library Association of Bangladesh (MedLAB) attended the ALIA Information Online 2019 Conference, Australia.

The conference took place on Mon 11 February to Fri 15 February 2019 at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney, Australia.

Mr Tutul is the first Bangladeshi delegate who gets this opportunity to participate in this ALIA Information Online conference. ALIA Information Online Conference is the biggest event in an information professional’s calendar in Australia. The conference has been held since 1990 and attracts over one thousand influential professionals from all sectors of the library industry. The conference program has a multi-sector focus and provides a unique opportunity for organisations to promote and showcase their products and services to a targeted and influential delegate group. Information Online gives access to key library and information service professionals from Australia, New Zealand, Asia Pacific, and beyond.

Bangladeshi library professionals attend the International conference on IndoKoha in India

A group of Library professionals attended the International conference on IndoKoha in India. The conference was held on 23 to 24 February 2019 at Vivekananda Sabhagriha, Belur Math, Kolkata, India. The conference was jointly organized by Bengal Library Association & Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira.

Some of the major objectives of the Conference were:

  • To create an awareness of the benefits of using Open Source Software
  • To popularize Koha as an Integrated Library Management System
  • To exchange information, knowledge and experience in using Koha for Library management
  • To bring together Koha Developers in Indian Subcontinent to share their expertise
  • To act as a common platform regarding any issue on Koha

Study visit in India: Libraries Unlimited Project creates learning opportunities for LIS professionals

An eleven member’s library professional team from the different district government public libraries recently successfully completed a study visit in India.

A six-day study tour was started on 10 March and ended on 16 March 2019. This tour was sponsored and patronized by of Libraries Unlimited project. During the tour, the participants visited several libraries including the National Library of India, the State Central Library of West Bengal, Bishovaroti Central Library, Bangladesh Bhawan, British Council Library, Uttar Chobbis Porgana District Government Public Library, Barasat Town Library, Asiatic Society and Bangladesh Deputy High Commission, Kolkata. During the visit, both of the country professionals participated in several discussion sessions, seminar and shared their ideas to develop the library services.

The participants reported that the tour was a successful experience comes with many benefits — both professionally and personally. The experiences they received will build lasting relationships with individuals and international colleagues in other countries as well.

Public Library campaign to create around 5 lakh new users in Govt Public Libraries

The British Council’s Libraries Unlimited Programme and the Department of Public Libraries have formally inaugurated their year-long Public Library Campaign- “Cholo Gronthagare Cholo, Dekhi Somvabonar Alo” on Tuesday at the Sufia Kamal Conference Room of the National Public Library, Dhaka.
Including the national level print and electronic media, Ashish Kumar Sarker, the Director General of the Department of Public Libraries and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs was present as the chief guest, Ms Barbara Wickham, Country Director, British Council Bangladesh and Abdullah Harun Pasha, Director, Department of Public Libraries and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Cultural Affairs was present as the Guest of Honours. Mr A. J. M. Abdullahel Baki, Director, Department of Public Libraries and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Cultural Affairs presided over the event.

Good news! When a library professional become a member of the Dhaka Bar Association!

Biswanath Bhattacharjee, Library In-charge, Sir John Wilson School, Dhaka

Biswanath Bhattacharjee, Library In-charge of Sir John Wilson School, United City, Satarkul, Dhaka, has recently been qualified in the Bangladesh Bar Council examinations and become a member of the Dhaka Bar Association.

His first research article entitled “To Search for an Effective Model of Constitutional Court for Bangladesh: An Analysis” has recently been published in the University Journal of UITS (the University of Information Technology and Sciences).

After receiving his B.A.(Hons) and M.A. degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Dhaka in 2000, he obtained his second master’s degree in English from the Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology in the year of 2009. Later he obtained LL.B. & LL.M. from the UITS respectively in 2014 & 2016.

Library and Information professionals mourn death of LIS legend Dr Mirza Mohd. Rezaul Islam

The Library and Information professional legend, Dr Mirza Mohd. Rezaul Islam, Librarian, Islamic University of Technology (IUT), and Chairman, Bangladesh Association of Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalists (BALID) has passed away on Friday, 15 March 2019 at 12:00 noon at Uttara Adhunik Hospital (Inna lillahi Oa Inna Ilahi Razeun).

On Monday, March 11, at around 7:00 am he was admitted to the Uttara Adhunik Hospital, Dhaka after he suffered a massive stroke.

He left behind his wife and two sons and a host of relatives, friends, colleagues and well-wishers to mourn his death. His first Namaz-e-Janaza was held on (15 March 2019) after Asr Prayers at Dhaka University Central Masjid and second Namaz-e-Janaza was held at Noor A Macca Mosque, Eastern Housing, Pallabi, Mirpur after Esha prayer of the same date. He was buried at Kalshi graveyard, Mirpur, Dhaka.

Session on Library Literacy held at Primeasia University Library

Primeasia University Central Library (PAUCL) organized a discussion session on the library system and use on February 26, 2019.

The session was focused not only the user’s library facilities but also focused more than just a place to find a good book and a quiet place to read.

Students of EEE and BBA were accustomed to a collaborative group work setting. This setting goal was to how university students can improve their knowledge through library-based individual or group study for class assignments and receiving other information.

Ms Zebunessa, Sr. Officer of Circulation explained how a student can be a member of the library. During the session, membership forms and rules of PAU Central Library were also distributed to the students.

Publication of new books by the Library Professionals and Academics in Amar Ekushey Boi Mela 2019

The month-long Ekushey Book Fair 2019 ended on Saturday 1 March 2019. The fair’s theme this year was “Bijoy 1952-71: New Phase”. A total of 499 publishers participated in the fair this year. Four thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty-Four new books were published during the fair. Even in the last day, 43 new books were released. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the fair on Bangla Academy premises.

Lekhok Bolchhi, a corner of the writer introduced in the fair where the writers could talk about their books for 20 minutes each.

A good number of library professionals and academics published their books this year. Among these, Professor Dr Kazi Mostak Gausul Hoq, Chairman, Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka has written two books titled “Ami Tilotomma” and  “Mour Singasoner Shamratera”. The books get published by Adorn and Batighor.
