TLT board meets the Libraries Unlimited Project team

A meeting between The Librarian Times (TLT) team led by the Editor, Prodip Roy and Libraries Unlimited Project team led by the project director Ms Kirsty Crawford was held on 3 April 2019 at the Libraries Unlimited Office, Shahbagh, Dhaka.

On behalf of TLT editorial board, Mr Mohammad Joynal Abdin and Mr Prodip Aich attended the meeting. Mr Prodip Roy attended the meeting via ZOOM online.

The Editor, TLT articulated that The Libraries Unlimited (LU) programme in Bangladesh is a milestone to modernise the public library network, build the capacity of library professionals, train library staff, and build public awareness of and access to library and information services. In the primary discussion with the LU project team, the board members spoke on TLT’s objective and future mission. TLT started its journey in Feb 2017 to overcome the Library and Information Science professional barriers, inspire professionals and contribute to the country by supporting library and information advocacy, organising the seminar Workshop and undertaking research on ongoing issues. » Read more

Khairul Islam receives doctoral admission from 7 major US research universities

Mr Khairul Islam, a former student of Information Science and Library Management, has received offers from the United States seven major research universities for his doctoral study beginning fall 2019. The universities include Howard University in Washington DC, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Georgia State University, Wayne State University in Michigan, Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and the University of Memphis in Tennessee.

Mr Khairul is interested in public health, health communications in particular.

“In my PhD, I will examine the state-of-science gap between health information diffusion and consumers’ perceptions of such information,” he said while talking to TLT.

Mr Khairul noted that with the rapid diffusion of digital technologies, the consumer health informatics has been evolving across the world including in Bangladesh, empowering many users to take an active role in making own health decisions. » Read more

Inauguration ceremony held for Library Automation and Career Development Corner at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University

An Inauguration ceremony was held for the Library Automation and Career Development Corner at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University on 1 April 2019. Prof. Dr Giasuddin Miah, Vice-Chancellor, BSMRAU was present as the Chief Guest in this inauguration session while Prof. Tofail Ahmed, BSMRAU was present as the Special Guest. Prof. Dr Mofazzal Hossain, Library Chief, BSMRAU conducted the ceremony. Koha-Integrated Library Management System has been implemented as part of the library automation project.

Dr Md. Anwarul Islam, Librarian, Sher-e Bangla Agriculture University and Mr Mubassir Ahsan, Assistant Librarian, Southeast University have been working behind the automation since the project started. Mr Md. Atik Zaman, Deputy Librarian, BSMRAU also has a tremendous contribution to make this automation pragmatic. » Read more

Jalal Uddin participates in an International Conference

Mr Sheikh Md. Jalal Uddin, Librarian (In charge) Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University participated in an International Conference on Intellectual Property Rights: Digital Transformation was held at Goa, India. He presented a paper on 27 March 2019. He also conducted a session as the chair of the mentioned conference. The conference was jointly organized by Fr. Angel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar, Goa, JK Business School, Gurugram, and SDPA, New Delhi.

English Chat held at Chapai Nawabganj District Public library

Keeping up a conversation in a second language can be tough for non-English speaking people. Not knowing what to say next can lead to awkward silences, which isn’t fun for the person you are speaking to. From this feeling, Mr. Masud Rana, librarian, district public library, Chapai Nawabganj initiated the program “English Chat”. A prescheduled English chat was arranged on March  27, 2019. There were 17 participants attended the program.

Inauguration ceremony held for the new Cyber Center at Chittagong University

The Chittagong University’s (CU) central library has started its automation project recently. The first phase of the project is successfully completed. As part of the project, a cyber centre was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury on campus on March 7, 2019.

Ms Dil Rukhsana Basunia, Deputy Librarian of the university shared this information to TLT. She also shared that after joining at CU within 3 months she started the automation project.

We will gradually complete the 2nd and 3rd phases of the projects and the whole library functions will be fully automated said Ms Basunia.

She also expressed that there will be more initiatives and projects soon to develop CU Central Library in the near future. » Read more

All 8 Newly-Appointed library professionals join at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant

A group of fresh library professionals have recently been appointed as Executive Apprentice at Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL) on 24 March 2019. They are Mr Md. Anarul Islam, Ms Anjuman Ara Jesmin, Mr Ahmadul Islam Hawlader, Ms Farjana Chaity, Mr Md. Mizanur Rahman, Mr Soikot Biswas, Mr Abdur Rashid and Mr Madhob Kumar.

Out of 8 professionals, the first four named mentioned are from Dhaka University and last four named mentioned are from Rajshahi University. All of them have completed both bachelor and masters degree in Information Science and Library Management.

TLT Panel Discussion: Bridging the Divide: Ascertaining the Place of Bangladeshi LIS Researchers and Practitioners in Global

A part of TLT Awards and Fun Night 2019, an exciting panel discussion session titled “Bridging the Divide: Ascertaining the Place of Bangladeshi LIS Researchers and Practitioners in Global” also will be held.

Abstract: Since its inception in 1959, the LIS education and LIS institutions has got new height to go further. In the last few years, there has been increasing participation of the Bangladeshi LIS people in various LIS events globally. They have been recognized and awarded many times and has been highly praised by many LIS associations, institutions globally. They are exploring their position in different LIS events e.g., conference, seminars, training, professional associations; winning grants; doing LIS job with confidence in different countries and equally put emphasis in research. While many LIS researchers and practitioners are contributing to the overall development of this discipline, there isn’t much talking till date looking at how much they are doing.

Bangladesh Association of Librarians Information Scientists and Documentalists (BALID) organized the memorial meeting and doa mahfil on its chairman at the CIRDAP auditorium on Saturday, March 23, 2019 (Saturday) in CIRDAP International Convention Centre at 4:00 pm.

Dr Reza’s sons Mirza Md. Asif Sakib and Mirza Md. Tehzib Sadaf along with family members, BALID Family members, academics and library professionals participated in the Mahfil and prayer.
