Let’s make our minds Open: An exclusive Interview with Dr Susmita Das

The Asia Open Access Conference was held in Dhaka on March 6-7. Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) organized the conference titled ‘Asia Open Access Dhaka 2019’ in collaboration with Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR). The event was coordinated by Dr Susmita Das, Principal Documentation Officer, & Vice President, Centre for Open Knowledge.

This type of event planning is a high-pressure job that requires a level head and the ability to stay client-centric during stressful situations. She has managed all the logistics and planning involved in pulling off the event. Doing this job is not easy. It requires creativity and imagination, hard work, brainstorm ideas for unique celebrations, be able to identify, understand, and meet what you want?

The Librarian Times’s Editor-in-Chief, Prodip Roy conducted the interview with Dr Das to ask some questions on the conference to get insights about the challenges and related issues involved for a successful event.

Southeast University Library organized a discussion session on “National Library Day 2019 & Best Library User Award Ceremony” on 7th February 2019 at the Hall Room of Southeast University (SEU) Banani Campus. Professor Dr ANM Meshquat Uddin, Vice Chancellor of SEU chaired the program, while Professor Dr M Nasiruddin Munshi, Department of Information Science & Library Management (ISLM), University of Dhaka (DU) was present as the Chief Guest and Professor Dr Kazi Mostak Gausul Hoq, Chairman of ISLM, DU was present as the Special Guest. Book Display program held at Principal Abdur Rashid Public Library at Setabganj, Dinajpur

Honourable State Minister for Shipping Ministry Mr Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury’s mother Romiza Rouf Chowdhury, Mr Bishonath Bhattachariya, Head Master, Setabganj Government High School, Mr Aminul Islam, Headmaster, Setabganj Girls High School and a good number of students of different schools and colleges were present during the book display program. Professor Dr Md. Nasiruddin Mitul, the Program Coordinator, On Campus Post Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Science and Dean, Schools of Undergraduate Studios, National University of Bangladesh

The High Court has cancelled the affiliation of SB Science and Technology College of Bogura for the admission of students in the Department of Library and Information Sciences Diploma Course under the National University. The High Court has given the verdict on the settlement of the writ on Wednesday, 13 February 2019. At the same time, the students who were admitted to the institute cannot take the exam, according to the order of the High Court.

Professor Dr Md. Nasiruddin Mitul, the Program Coordinator, On Campus Post Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Science and Dean, Schools of Undergraduate Studies, National University of Bangladesh, told The Librarian Times’s Editor in an exclusive online interview on Tuesday evening that the activities of SB Science and Technology College in Bogura were all illegal. That is why the court cancelled its affiliation with the National University. At the same time, the students of the institute will not be able to participate in the examination.

“Internet and Library both are playing a very significant role in the developing nation”- Yeafesh Osman, the Honourable Minister, Ministry of Science and Technology

A seminar on Library vs Internet was held on 23 February 2019 at CIRDAP (Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and Pacific) International Conference Centre, 17 Topkana road, Dhaka.

The Chief Guest of the ceremony Architect Yeafesh Osman, the Honourable Minister, Ministry of Science and Technology mentioned through a video message that “Internet and Library both are playing a very significant role in the developing nation. The present government is very much library friendly that’s why the government has declared 5th February as the National Library Day to celebrate nationwide.” Different programs are continuing for higher education enhancement; like UDL-UGC consortium, Libraries Unlimited project etc. At present half of the total population of Bangladesh uses the Internet and the number of users is rapidly increasing. Library and Internet both are different issues and important as well”

The celebration of National Library Day 2019 by all District Government Public Libraries

The National Library Day 2019 was celebrated for the second time in Bangladesh on 5 February 2019 with the theme “Read books on libraries, enlighten people”. All district government public libraries in the country took part in the celebration. According to the guideline of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, individual district public library organised their own programs including arranging and participating colourful rallies with senior administrations of the district, high officials, public libraries staff and students from different schools, colleges and madrasahs. In addition, many libraries organised multiple events including Award Giving Ceremony, Best Reader Competitions, Debate Competitions and Panel Discussion to promote the library services and encourage readers to join the library. District Government Public Library Netrokona

On this occasion, district administration and district government public library, Netrokona organized a colourful rally from the office of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office at 11:30 AM. With the initiative of the district administration and government public library, the rally came out of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Joynagar and ended with the main road of Moktarapara Library. Additional district magistrate (ADM) Sabiha Sultana and Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Shahjahan Mia led the operation. Students and heads of government organizations, Government Women’s Colleges, Government Adarsh Higher Girl’s School, Anjuman Government Adarsha High School and many other organizations took part in the rally. In order to achieve the significance of the National Library Day, there were discussion programs and award ceremonies for the readers in the district public library.
