Mahtab Uddin Ahmad started his professional career in Dhaka University at History Department’s seminar library and participated in Library Certificate Course from Bangladesh Library Association.  He earned his Diploma a master’s in library science from Dhaka University.  He worked in several other libraries, including – (1) International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR, B) as documentation assistant, (2) Library of Congress Dhaka Office as representative, (3) The Archer K. Blood American Center Library, Dhaka (4) Chantilly Regional Library , Virginia, USA and (5) currently working at Strayer University Library, USA.

He is an active member of Bangladesh Library Association (LAB), Bangladesh Association of Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalists (BALID), and American Library Associations (ALA).

Ms Hena Biswas has joined as Documentation Officer at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) on 1 August 2018. Prior to joining at KUET, she worked as a part-time Cataloguer at Rajshahi University Central Library. Ms Biswas graduated with B.S.S (Hons.) and M.S.S degree in Information Science & Library Management from University of Rajshahi.
She was the General Secretary (2016-17), Badhan, Rokeya Hall Unit (A Voluntary Blood Donating Organization).

BANSDOC Officials’ Visit Australian Library and Information Organisations

A team from the Bangladesh National Scientific and Technical Documentation Centre (BANSDOC) visited ALIA House to learn about the Australian library and information sector and ALIA’s accreditation of library courses as well as the ALIA PD Scheme. (Photo ALIA Weekly Volume 6 Issue 30)

A four-member team led by Ms Jesmine Akhter, Director General (Additional Secretary) of Bangladesh National Scientific and Technical Documentation Centre (BANSDOC) is currently on an official visit to different Govt. and national level library and information institutions/organizations in Australia. The purpose of their visit is to learn about the Australian Library and Information Sector and ALIA’s Accreditation of Library Courses as well as the ALIA PD Scheme. On the occasion, they visited the Australian National Library and ALIA House. The week-long visit will end on August 6, which started on July 29, 2018. It is expected that the gathered knowledge of this visit will add extra value in practising documentation, library and information services within BANSDOC and in the profession.

Other members of the visiting team include Mrs Iti Rani Poddar (Additional Secretary (NP), Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr Mohammad Aslam Ali Khandkar, Photographic Officer, BANSDOC and Mr Md. Sayem Khan, Junior Reprographic Officer, BANSDOC.

Department of Information Studies and Library Management, East West University, organises “Self-facilitated Discussion on IFLA Global Vision 2018”

The Department of Information Studies and Library Management, East West University, organized “Self-facilitated Discussion on IFLA Global Vision 2018” on 29th July 2018 at the Faculty Lounge of East West University. Dr Dilara Begum, Associate Professor and Chairperson, and Secretary of Information Literacy Section, IFLA has taken this self-initiative to arrange a focus group discussion to generate action ideas for the opportunities derived from the first phase of IFLA’s initiation taken back in 2017.

The Discussion was conducted with some of the prominent Library and Information Professionals of Bangladesh to generate innovative ideas to achieve the global vision of the International Federation of Library Association and Institutions (IFLA). The participants were invited following the IFLA Guidelines which mentioned that the number of participants must be limited to 20 and must include professionals from different types of organizations. The participants included academicians and Library professionals from Academic Libraries, National Library, Public Library, Special Library and research institutes, as well as Library Associations.

The Discussion was conducted in a very lively and interactive manner where all the participants from different library experiences felt free and comfortable to share their knowledge and experience while discussing the future of the LIS profession in Bangladesh. The participants contributed to the generation of innovative action ideas that would increase collaboration and unite the future leaders of the field.

In phase 1 of IFLA’s global vision discussion, ten opportunities have been discovered for the library field. These opportunities are global. Regionally, nationally, and locally, there are differences in which opportunities take priority. In the discussion, participants debated about the top opportunities for Bangladesh and Asia and Oceania Region.

The organiser of the discussion is required to submit a country report based on the outcome of the discussion from Bangladesh so that IFLA can be aware of the present condition and future scenario of the LIS profession in Bangladesh.

At the beginning of 2019, the results of all the workshops and online discussions will be presented to IFLA’s Governing Body, which in turn will use the ideas for actions to create concrete strategies, processes and work programmes for the future.

Professor Dr Mofakhar Hussain Khan- a living legend of Bangladesh LIS profession : Brief Biography

The eminent faculty member and library professional in Library Education of Bangladesh Dr Mofakhar Hussain Khan who has national and International fame was born on 1 January 1941 at Soiladi Village, Kaliganj Upazila, Gazipur in a renowned family.

Dr Mofakhr received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from London University

As a scholar student he completed his Master of Arts from University of Dhaka, Master of Library Science (MLS) from Hawaii, University, Honolulu, United States of America (USA), and then he completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from London University in the said subject.

His successful career started at the East Pakistan Central Public Library

He started his career at the East Pakistan Central Public Library as a Library Assistant. Then he worked for the Central Board for Development of Bengali (at present it is attached with Bangla Academy) Dhaka. After that, he went to London for higher study. After completing his PhD at London University, he started his career at Siraj University, Iran at the Department of Library and Information Science as a Professor. Later on, he worked at Bayero University Kano, Nigeria as a Professor.

After that Prof. Dr Khan joint at the University of Dhaka as a Librarian in the year 1986. He introduced the first training programme on AACR-2  for the library professionals of Bangladesh. Though this code was familiar from the year 1978 Library Professionals of Bangladesh didn’t use it till the year 1986. Prof. Khan resigned from his Job at the University of Dhaka in 1988. Later on, he started his career at King Abdul Aziz University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia(KSA) in the same teaching position. After retirement from here in 2004, he came back to Bangladesh and started passing his retirement life at his native village at Gazipur.

Prof. Dr Khan publishes more than one hundred research articles

Prof. Dr Khan publishes more than one hundred research articles on the National and International level. Few recognized and well-known publications are Ekushe Granthopongi Sonkolon, Dhaka, 1971, A Dictionary of Librarianship (Dhaka 1973), DU for Islam and Bangladesh (1st edition 1987, 2nd 1988 and 3rd 1999). History of printing the Holy Quran (Dhaka-1988), Modernization of Library and its Education (1988), The Eastern Librarian and Librarianship of Bangladesh (1988), Bibliographic Control of Qurnic Literature (1993), Pobitra Quran Paker Itihas o Bonganubader Sotoborsho(Dhaka-1997),English translation of the Holy Quran: a bio-bibliographic study(Tokyo, Singapore 1997), The Bengal Book: history of printing and bookmarking 1667-1866, 2nd part(Dhaka 1999-2001).

Before and after leaving Bangladesh Prof. Dr Khan also worked as a visiting faculty member of Department of Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka, Institute of Library and Information Science and others organization.

From his active initiative, a Sophisticated Mosque and Madrasha has been established. His momentary life is passing by practising religious activities and research.

Bangla Academy Director General Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan is holding the keynote speech

Prof. Dr Mofakhar Hussain Khan, the former librarian of the University of Dhaka, has received an ‘Honorarium Crest’ from the Ahmed Smriti Patagar. An event was organized at Shamsur Rahaman hall at the premise of Bangla Academy on 28 July 2018.

Dr Khan studied different educational intuition at Bangladesh, USA and UK. He worked in different countries like Bangladesh, Iran, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. Currently, he is living at Kaliganj Upazila in Gazipur.

After receiving the award Prof. Khan expressed his feeling about the devotion of work and its importance. All participants in the event listened to his speech very deeply.

Prof. Shamsuzzaman Khan, Director General of Bangla Academy was the chief guest of the event while Mr M. Shamsul Islam Khan was the special guest of the event who was the former president of Library Association of Bangladesh. Mr Fazle Rabbi, former Director of Bangla Academy, National Book Centre, and founder of Ahmed Smriti Patagar presided over the program. The welcome speech was given by Mr Kazi Abdul Majed, Director Institute of Library and Information Science, Dhaka. Mr Khandaker Fazlur Rahman, former Librarian, University of Dhaka emphasized on biography in brief on Dr Khan. In addition, former Chairman of Jessore Education Board Mr Amirul Alam Khan discussed on Library movement activities of Bangladesh and its contribution of Dr Khan. Economist and Journalist Mr Azadul Kibria conducted this segment of the event.

Invited guests and speakers shared their opinion on the knowledge-based society and its legacy towards civilization and how the library played a pivotal role, what contributions of Dr Mofakhar had towards the society. Attended guests criticized the result oriented education system, memorizing system, misuse of technology. How the society can overcome these challenges also pointed out. Sufficient budget for library and with the modernization of it by converting the characteristics of true information, special mark for using the library at school level may be the solutions to face the prevailing problems.

North South University Arranged a Workshop On Building High Impact Research Portfolio with Scopus

North South University Library and Office of the Graduate Studies jointly organised a workshop, titled “Workshop on Building High Impact Research Portfolio with Scopus” on 26 July 2018 at 11:20 AM – 12: 50 PM (LIB-608). Total twenty-seven faculty members from various schools and departments participated in the program.

Mr M M Shoeb, Sr. Assistant Librarian, in his welcome speech mentioned the objective of the workshop, the importance of the Scopus indexed journals for better citation and impact in QS Ranking.

Dr Md. Zahid Hossain Shoeb, NSU Librarian, described Advanced Search Techniques on Scopus, Search Result Analysis Procedure, Several Journal Metrics, and Journals Scientific Prestige etc.

Professor Sharif Nurul Ahkam, Director, Graduate Studies, showed the research techniques based on Scopus citation database.

The workshop ended with a Question/Answer session and at the end of the session Professor Sharif Nurul Ahkam, Director, Graduate Studies, and Dr Md. Zahid Hossain Shoeb, NSU Librarian, distributed certificates among the participants of the program.

Koishor Tarunnye Boi turns year two

Koishor Tarunnye Boi is a book reading campaign of the leading publishing houses of Bangladesh. The campaign entered its second year recently. This platform was inaugurated on 23 July 2016.

To celebrate this occasion they organised a three-day book fair. The fair kicked off at the premises of Rajuk Uttara Model College in Dhaka. Children’s literature author Ali Imam inaugurated the fair as the chief guest.  In his speech he said, dreams are born from reading books. Koishor Tarunye Boi president Tushar Abdullah presided over the ceremony. He emphasizes on reading books in spite of dependence on machines. Rajuk Uttara Model College principal Mr Kazi Showkat Alam and journalist Mr Tushar Abdullah were present at the event as the special guests.

It was the 42nd book fair organised by Koishor Tarunnye Boi. A total of 12 publishers have participated in the fair.
