On the occasion of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s 122nd birth anniversary, the Department of Public Libraries hosted a virtual discussion and cultural program on 25 May 2021.

The program was divided into two parts. The first part was a discussion session on the national poet and the second part was a cultural program.

Md. Badrul Arefin, honourable Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs inaugurated the discussion session and cultural program as the chief guest while Asim Kumar Dey, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, was a present as the special guest.

Professor Dr. Md. Shiful Islam appointed as chairman of the Department of Information Science and Library Management (ISLM), DU

Professor Dr. Md. Shiful Islam

Professor Dr Md. Shiful Islam has been named as the chairman (dept. head) of the Information Science and Library Management (ISLM) effective May 8, 2021.

Dr Shiful is an academic and researcher on several LIS-related topics, including, Information for Social Innovation, the role of special libraries for building a knowledge-based economy in Bangladesh, and Knowledge Management Practices. His present research focuses on emerging tools and techniques for Library and Information Service Innovation, Skill Science, Service Science and knowledge Science.

IFLA Election 2021: Dil Ruksana Basunia is a candidate for standing committee member of the Academic and Research Libraries Section

Dil Ruksana Basunia, Deputy Librarian, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh, and an Adjunct Faculty in a private university in Chittagong, is a candidate for standing committee member of the Academic Research Libraries Section of IFLA election 2021.

Before her current position, she worked as Librarian at Asian University for Women (AUW) Bangladesh. She completed her B.A, Masters and MPhil (continuing) in Information Science and Library Management from the University of Dhaka. 

She was awarded a Gold Medal from Maitree Foundation, the University of Dhaka, for her academic excellence. Mrs Basunia was also awarded the “TLT Excellence Academic Librarian Award 2019 (Academic Librarian of the Year) for outstanding contribution to the academic libraries in Bangladesh. She has over 12 years of professional experience part-time and full time in diversified institutions, both government and private.

What She’d like to accomplish?

Since most Bangladeshi library professionals are unfamiliar with ARL, IFLA, and various activities, I believe I will be able to create a bridge between Bangladeshi library professionals and IFLA, allowing Bangladeshi library professionals to participate in ARL and IFLA in a variety of ways in the future-says Dil Ruksana Basunia.

“I also want to assist the board in fostering and diverse collaborating to ensure continued representation and relevance for our respective organizations and societies and lead the sector in raising the sector profile.”

World Book and Copyright Day 2021: Books our best friend during pandemic!

Books are our best friend that never leaves us alone. World Book Day is celebrated every year on April 23. The day is also known as the World Book and Copyright Day or International Day of the Book. To promote the importance of reading, lifelong affection for literature, and inculcate joy and faster the growth of readers and emphasize the pleasure of reading, UNESCO introduced the event that is now celebrated in more than 100 countries.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, when the world has seen periods of confinement, and people have had to stay at their home, books have proved to be the best companion, powerful tools to combat isolation, reinforce ties between people, expand horizons, and precisely stimulating minds and creativity. 

In some countries, the number of books reading has been doubled.

ASIS&T South Asia Chapter Best Practices Sharing: An insight

Behind the scenes:
In 2017 at Washington D.C., Md. Anwarul Islam and Naresh (President-Elect, ASIS&T) talked to each other for the first time to frame the South Asia Chapter. As a New Leader Awardee of ASIS&T, Dr Anwar started working with Naresh Agarwal to establish the chapter. Based on the proposal the ASIS&T board approved the chapter in September 2018. At that time, ASIS&T had 14 regional chapters and 39 student chapters in different universities.

Professor Dr. S M Mannan wins Dr Md. Nazim Uddin Memorial Academic of the year award 2021

Professor S M Mannan has been selected as the recipient of the 2021 Dr Md. Nazim Uddin Memorial Academic of the year award. He has been recognised as one of the most influential LIS academics in Bangladesh of all time. Bangladesh Association of Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalists (BALID) has nominated him for this award for his outstanding teaching and learning contribution and dedication to the country’s LIS community.

Muhammad Hossam Haider Chowdhury, who was one of the selection committee members, said, “Professor S M Mannan has a strong influence on Bangladesh’s library profession. He maintains relations with the people from the library professionals, somewhat out of the library profession. His networking capacity is highly appreciable of all time. His leadership in the library profession of Bangladesh is unquestionable.”
