icddr,b leads the dialogue on how to avoid publishing articles in predatory journals

icddr,b’s Library and Information Services Section organised a discussion on “Open Access and Predatory Publishers” with 26 faculty members and librarians from different eminent public, private, international universities, research organization, and government organizations of the country to raise awareness on how to avoid publishing research articles in predatory journals and why it matters. The discussion was held on 01 November 2018 at the cyber corner of icddr,b Library.

BRAC University Librarian attended a Board Meeting of Cambridge University Press

The Cambridge University Press has set up a new Library Advisory Board for South Asia on 6th December 2017. Ms Hasina Afroz, University librarian of BRAC University has been selected as a member of Cambridge University Press South Asian Librarian Advisory Board (SALAB) from Bangladesh. She attended the board meeting of SALAB in New Delhi on October 22, 2018, and she was the only participant from Bangladesh.

 

SALAB selects academic librarian representatives across India to explore the needs and challenges faced by academic libraries, as well as it helps the Cambridge University Press to understand researcher needs and the changing role of librarians providing a vital source of feedback on new platforms, products and initiatives. » Read more

The University of Kalyani has conferred a PhD degree to Md. Moniruzzaman

Md. Moniruzzaman, National Information Officer and Head of United Nations Information Centre (Bangladesh), on 11 October 2018 was conferred with a PhD in Library and Information Science by the University of Kalyani (India) for his research on “ A critical study of information support services of UN agencies towards socio-economic development of Bangladesh.’’ Sri Sabuj Dasgupta of the Department of Library and Information Science of the University of Kalyani supervised the thesis.

Librarian, reciting artist from India Shaoli Rai performed at National Museum

A programme called “India – Bangladesh friendship through poems and melodies” has been organised by Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, High Commission of India, Dhaka performed by Ms Shaoli Rai and Mr Amit Bhoumik from Agartala, India and Dr Sahadat Hossain Nipu from Bangladesh on October 27, 2018, at the Kabi Sufia Kamal Auditorium, Bangladesh National Museum, Dhaka.

Shopno Sarothi Public Library has been selected for Joy Bangla Youth Award

Shopno Sarothi Public Library, Naogaon has been selected for this year’s Joy Bangla Youth Award. This year 50 organizations and platforms under 10 categories have been selected for the award. The selection was made on 27th October 2018 of the two-day Joy Bangla Youth Award ceremony at Sheikh Hasina National Youth Development Institute, Savar. The name of the top 30 organizations will be announced later.

Fault LineA book review program on Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten The World Economy held on 25 September 2018 at projection room of Bangladesh Bank Library. The book was written by Raghuram Rajan, former governor of Reserve Bank of India and becomes very popular around the world.

Dr Md. Kabir Ahmed, General Manager, Financial Stability Department, Bangladesh Bank was the discussant on the book.

Mr Rajan was one of the few economists who warned of the global financial crisis before it hit. Now, as the world struggles to recover, it’s tempting to blame what happened on just a few greedy bankers who took irrational risks and left the rest of us to foot the bill. » Read more

Ahmadul Islam Howlader awarded Md. Shahid Ullah Memorial Gold Medal

Mr Ahmadul Islam Howlader, a student of the Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka has been awarded for Md. Shahid Ullah Memorial Gold Medal, 2017. He is honoured with this Gold Medal for achieving highest CGPA in Advanced Classification and Cataloguing (Practical) course in M.A. Final Examination 2017. Md. Shahid Ullah Memorial Gold Medal Trust Fund was established in July 2017 at the department. This is the First Gold Medal from the trust.

Ms Susmita Saha, a student of the Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka has been awarded the Lion Md. Jonab Ali and Farzana Jonab Gold Medal, 2017. She is honoured with this Gold Medal for achieving highest CGPA in B.A. (Hons.) final examination in 2017. The medal has been awarded under Lion Md. Jonab Ali and Farzana Jonab Trust Fund which was established in March 2016 in the department. This is the second Medal of the Fund.
