“The government is working to ensure the freedom of mass media platforms in Bangladesh”, Information Minister and Awami League’s publicity and publication secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud has stated in a discussion titled ‘State of Mass Media Scenario: Perspective Bangladesh Perspective,’ on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day at National Press Club, Dhaka on May 2, 2019, Thursday.

The minister said: “Present government is cordial and sincere about media freedom, and the motto of government is to build a multi-dimensional society, and freedom of the media is a must in order to do that.” The minister also marked that the government is very careful so that none can abuse these laws to harass media persons and journalists.

Every year May 3 is observed as ‘World Press Freedom Day’ all over the world since the proclamation made by the United Nation General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation adopted at the 26th session of Unesco’s General Conference in 1991. The theme of this year’s day is “Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation”. This year’s theme emphasizes the issue such as the safety of journalists and how they can better push back against a growing climate of disinformation by ensuring freedom of expression and fundamental human rights.
