It is with deep personal regret that Prof Mahbubur Rahman, Director General of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), died at a Singapore hospital on Saturday, 3 November 2018. Prof Mahbubur died after a long struggle with respiratory complications. Each of us not only grieves at the passing of an incredible individual for Bangladesh’s education sector but also for the loss his family suffers. He was only 57.

Mahbubur Rahman breathed his last around 12:20 pm (Bangladesh time) while undergoing treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. The DG, who had been suffering from respiratory complications, was admitted to the hospital on September 24.

Seminar at closing ceremony of week-long programs of Global Media and Information literacy week 2018

The seventh annual Global Media and Information literacy week, 2018 last one week, beginning on, Wednesday 24th October – 31 October under the theme “Media and Information Literate Cities: Voices, Powers, and Change Make”. Information Studies and Library Management Department of East West University is first in Bangladesh who celebrates Global MIL week. For the second time, this year they observed Global MIL week through a week-long program. The yearly Global Media and Information literacy week, initiated in 2012, led by UNESCO. The week-long program closed by a Seminar on “Media and Information Literate Cities: Voices, Powers, and Change Makers” at S.M. Nousher Ali Lecture Gallery in East West University on 30th October (one day before the end of Global Media and Information literacy week).

National committee of Bangiya Grantha Jadughar

Bangiya Grantha Jadhughar (Museum) is the first book museum in Bangladesh. Its national committee has been formed on 26 October. On that day, a meeting was held at the Finance Minister’s Government house at Hare Road in the capital. Mr Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, honourable Finance Minister and a Bengali Language Movement Veteran has taken charge as the Chairman of the Bangiya Grantha Jadhughar. He said this museum would be established as a national specialised institution.

Inauguration of new building of Bangladesh Film Archives

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated Bangladesh Film Archive Building and Information Building under the Ministry of Information in Dhaka’s Agargaon area through video conferencing at her official Gonobhaban residence on 1st November 2018. The new building has been constructed at the cost of 86 crores 75 lakh taka, 1.86 acres of land at Agargaon in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.

icddr,b leads the dialogue on how to avoid publishing articles in predatory journals

icddr,b’s Library and Information Services Section organised a discussion on “Open Access and Predatory Publishers” with 26 faculty members and librarians from different eminent public, private, international universities, research organization, and government organizations of the country to raise awareness on how to avoid publishing research articles in predatory journals and why it matters. The discussion was held on 01 November 2018 at the cyber corner of icddr,b Library.

BRAC University Librarian attended a Board Meeting of Cambridge University Press

The Cambridge University Press has set up a new Library Advisory Board for South Asia on 6th December 2017. Ms Hasina Afroz, University librarian of BRAC University has been selected as a member of Cambridge University Press South Asian Librarian Advisory Board (SALAB) from Bangladesh. She attended the board meeting of SALAB in New Delhi on October 22, 2018, and she was the only participant from Bangladesh.

 

SALAB selects academic librarian representatives across India to explore the needs and challenges faced by academic libraries, as well as it helps the Cambridge University Press to understand researcher needs and the changing role of librarians providing a vital source of feedback on new platforms, products and initiatives. » Read more

The University of Kalyani has conferred a PhD degree to Md. Moniruzzaman

Md. Moniruzzaman, National Information Officer and Head of United Nations Information Centre (Bangladesh), on 11 October 2018 was conferred with a PhD in Library and Information Science by the University of Kalyani (India) for his research on “ A critical study of information support services of UN agencies towards socio-economic development of Bangladesh.’’ Sri Sabuj Dasgupta of the Department of Library and Information Science of the University of Kalyani supervised the thesis.
