The summit featured keynote speakers: Ana Filipa Vrdoljak, Professor of Law at the University of Technology Sydney and UNESCO Chair on International Law and Cultural Heritage

At the IFLA Information Future Summit 2024, renowned expert Ana Filipa Vrdoljak emphasised the vital importance of libraries and archives in fostering free, equitable, and inclusive societies. Despite facing numerous challenges, libraries are increasingly recognised internationally as essential institutions.
Ana cited key frameworks that underscore libraries’ critical role including:
  • IFLA-UNESCO Public Library Manifesto 2022
  • MONDIACULT Final Declaration 2022
  • UNESCO Framework for Culture and Arts Education 2024

Emphasise libraries’ role in promoting:

  • Human rights
  • Sustainable development
  • Peace and stability as a global common good.

Md. Anwarul Islam, Professor in the Department of Information Science and Library Management at the University of Dhaka, participated in the “Dynamic Convergence” Open Science workshop held in Washington, D.C. on September 18-19, 2024. Organised by the Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA) in collaboration with CERN, UNESCO, NASA, and the National Science Foundation (NSF), the event brought together approximately 100 participants from 31 countries.

World Book and Copyright Day 2021: Books our best friend during pandemic!

Books are our best friend that never leaves us alone. World Book Day is celebrated every year on April 23. The day is also known as the World Book and Copyright Day or International Day of the Book. To promote the importance of reading, lifelong affection for literature, and inculcate joy and faster the growth of readers and emphasize the pleasure of reading, UNESCO introduced the event that is now celebrated in more than 100 countries.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, when the world has seen periods of confinement, and people have had to stay at their home, books have proved to be the best companion, powerful tools to combat isolation, reinforce ties between people, expand horizons, and precisely stimulating minds and creativity. 

In some countries, the number of books reading has been doubled.
