Birth anniversary of national poet celebrated across the country

The 120th birth anniversary of the national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam, was celebrated in the country on Saturday. The government, different libraries including National Book Centre, department of public libraries and different socio-cultural, and political organisations, arranged elaborate programs to observe the day. This year’s theme of the birth anniversary is “Bangabandhu’s Bangladesh in Nazrul’s Conscience.”

Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on 25 May 1899 in Churulia village of Burdwan district of West Bengal, India. Nazrul, through his fiery poems, had inspired people to fight against injustice and repressions of the colonial rule

The birth anniversary of the poet was also celebrated at Trishal, in Mymensingh, Daulatpur, in Comilla, and Chittagong by respective local administrations. Various educational institutions across the country, as well as all the Bangladeshi embassies abroad, observed the day. The Nazrul Institute and Shilpakala Academy also organised programs to mark the day.

The Cultural Affairs Ministry and different organisations paid tribute to the poet, by placing floral wreaths, at his grave beside the Central Mosque of Dhaka University, in the morning. Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar broadcasted various programs on occasion.
