School and college librarians have been given ‘teacher’ status

Since the establishment of the National Education Policy 2010, the position of school librarian was created in Bangladesh. Since the school librarian recruitment, there was a massive conflict and confusion surrounding the school librarians roles. The role of assistant librarian was removed from the third and fourth-class employees list in the partial amendment order issued on January 8, 2013. In this order, the assistant librarians were treated as teaching staff. On the other hand, the revised regulations of the Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board issued on December 22, 2016, stated that “librarians, assistant librarians and any staff appointed for office management or part-time teaching shall not be considered as teachers.” Since then, the assistant librarians have been struggling with their position status and demanding the return of their teacher status through a government order (The Daily Star, 2021).

Boibondhu book exchange festival takes place at Rabindra Sarobar

Boibondhu’s book trade festival at Rabindra Sarobar, Dhanmondi.

The foundation Boibundhu arranged the Book Exchange Festival in the premises of Robindro Sorobor, Dhanmondi on February 26, 2021, which was joined by an unimaginable number of booklovers from morning to dusk. Initially, Boibundhu was a foundation of four friends. Once read a book, it becomes old for many people. Sometimes the book is kept on the book shelve. But if we exchange books with each other without leaving them on the shelves, the books come back to life and it increases human knowledge.

IUB celebrates Mujib 100 Years and National Library Day 2021

Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) Library arranged an award-giving ceremony of the competition on library e-resources used during the pandemic and inaugurated the library’s world religion corner to celebrate the National Library Day-2021 & 100 years of Mujib on 23rd February 2021. Professor Dr Milan Pagon, Vice-Chancellor (Acting) of IUB, was present as the event’s chief guest.

Sufia Kamal National Public Library and Sporsho Foundation inaugurate Braille Corner

A Braille Corner for the visually impaired was set up at the Sufia Kamal National Public Library in collaboration with the Sparsh Foundation on the occasion of the Mujib Year. State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid, MP, Md Abubakar Siddique, Director-General of the Department of Public Library and Nazia Jabeen, President of Sporsho Foundation, along with other officials were present at the event.

Afterwards, on the occasion of Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birthday and National Children’s Day 2021 on March 17, the State Minister of Cultural Affairs addressed the inaugural function of a three-day book exhibition and cultural program jointly organized by the Department of Public Libraries and National Library Center. Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Mr Md. Badrul Arefin presided over the function. Mr Md. Abubakar Siddique, Director General of the Department of Public Libraries and Mr Mozammel Babu, Editor-in-Chief of Ekattar TV addressed the function as special guests. Mr Minar Mansur, Director, National Book Center and eminent poet and journalist gave a welcome address on the occasion.

The corner consists of 90 books, including biographies, children’s stories, poems, and many more in its collection. Many of the books focus on the history of Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
