School Libraries Face Multiple Barriers in Bangladesh

Last year, on National Library Day, the Daily Star published an article entitled “School librarians should be given teacher’ status.” Then on 28th March 2021, a circular was issued by the concerned authority of the Bangladesh government, showing all school librarians and assistant school librarians have been given teacher status. The article was fundamental in the context of that time. After a long movement and waiting period, the school librarians and assistant school librarians got the teacher status. The inequality is now eliminated after the announcement of the new MPO policies and the human resources framework 2021 for private schools and colleges. The new position of the school librarian is called ‘Teacher (Library and Information Science)’, and Assistant Librarian cum Cataloguer is called ‘Assistant Teacher (Library and Information Science).

South Asia Chapter, ASIS&T has been awarded special funding to pursue a project on ‘Dealing with COVID-19′

South Asia Chapter of ASIS&T has been awarded special funding to pursue a unique project on ‘Dealing with COVID-19 and Saving People’s Lives in South Asia (SA) Areas & Beyond – A Health Informatics Promotion Project’. This Chapter proposes to set up a YouTube channel to host multilingual videos for disseminating awareness on a variety of topics on Covid-19 in the South Asia region. This project runs in collaboration with the Asia Pacific and European Chapter to bring their experience dealing with similar viruses in the past. This Chapter expects that the content for these videos will help fight misinformation and disinformation regarding Covid-19 information by citing accurate and reliable sources of information.

Dr. Dilara Begum electes as IFLA Professional Division Committee Chair 2021-2023

Dr. Dilara Begum, Associate Professor and Chairperson, Department of Information Studies and Library Management and Librarian (In-charge), East West University, has been elected as the IFLA Professional Division Committee Chair for 2021-2023. This is the most significant achievement in the history of Library professionals of Bangladesh. It is worth mentioning that only IFLA officers can be elected for this position. Dr. Dilara Begum has been working as one of the IFLA officers for the last few years. She has been making an outstanding contribution to the LIS fields as well as IFLA and serving in diversified leadership roles, including elected Secretary, IFLA Information Literacy Section, Standing Committee Member of IFLA Management and Marketing Section, Information Coordinator of IFLA Asia and Oceania Section, Standing Committee member of the European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL), General Secretary, DLNetSA, Country Coordinator of Information Literacy Consortium sponsored by UNESCO, elected Senior Vice President and Women Affairs Secretary of Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB) from 2009-2014, President (Acting) of Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB) in 2011.

Inauguration of free online course ‘Python for research’ by BRBD

A free orientation class of ‘Python for Research’ was arranged by the popular Facebook group ‘Be Researcher BD-BRBD’ in Bangladesh. The program started at 7.00 pm on March 31, 2021, and ended at 8.10 pm. Out of 1061 registered researchers, teachers and students from more than 110 educational institutions in the country and abroad, 75 people were selected for the course through the online quiz and special rules.
