The Librarian Times enters its sixth year! What have we achieved in the last five years?

The Librarian Times entered its sixth year after completing its fifth successful years on 2nd February 2022!
In the last five years, TLT has made a significant contribution to the library profession, especially to the library sector in Bangladesh. What have we achieved in the last five years, if anyone asks us? We would say that TLT has launched several professional awards for Library Professionals for the first time in Bangladesh. TLT introduced the first library and information science webinar in the history of Bangladesh.
In addition, TLT played a role in taking the library profession to a higher level through increasing domestic and international collaboration.

Let us take a look at our achievements in 5 years.

As an Editor-in-chief, I would like to give all the credit for the success to TLT members who have been involved with TLT activities for the last five years.

School Libraries Face Multiple Barriers in Bangladesh

Last year, on National Library Day, the Daily Star published an article entitled “School librarians should be given teacher’ status.” Then on 28th March 2021, a circular was issued by the concerned authority of the Bangladesh government, showing all school librarians and assistant school librarians have been given teacher status. The article was fundamental in the context of that time. After a long movement and waiting period, the school librarians and assistant school librarians got the teacher status. The inequality is now eliminated after the announcement of the new MPO policies and the human resources framework 2021 for private schools and colleges. The new position of the school librarian is called ‘Teacher (Library and Information Science)’, and Assistant Librarian cum Cataloguer is called ‘Assistant Teacher (Library and Information Science).

TLT Research Seminar: Scholarly Productivity of Library and Information Science Research in Bangladesh: A Bibliometric Study from 1971 – 2020

This research seminar aims to discuss about the recent research article on the LIS Scholarly Productivity in Bangladesh. Through engaging researchers and topics, we hope to spark dialogue and relationship across Bangladeshi LIS academic and professional’s community for a justifiable future.

Since the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, LIS Faculty members, practitioners and researchers have published widely in many leading LIS journals and conferences some of which are listed by WoS and SCOPUS. Publishing trends has shown positive growth during the last two decades. As per the Scimago journal and country rank (2019), there are only fifteen Bangladeshi scholarly journals are listed. Bangladesh’s two LIS journals, ‘The Eastern Librarian’ ‘Bangladesh Journal of Library and Information Science’, both journals are irregular and not indexed by Scopus, or listed in Scimago journal ranking. We, LIS faculties, researchers and practitioners in Bangladesh do not know the ratio of publication visibility in the leading global outlet.
