Md. Anwarul Islam Receives the Lois Lunin Award 2023

Md. Anwarul Islam

The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is pleased to announce that Md. Anwarul Islam from the University of Dhaka, Dhaka Bangladesh, has been selected as the recipient of the Lois Lunin Award in 2023. This prestigious award acknowledges individuals who have made remarkable contributions to the field of Information Science and Technology through their leadership, mentoring, and innovative work.

Dr. Islam currently serves as an Associate Professor of Information Science & Library Management at the University of Dhaka. He initially began his career in the telecommunications industry and later transitioned to academia. He earned his PhD from the School of Knowledge Science at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), Japan. His primary research interests revolve around Knowledge Management, Information Behaviour, and Informetrics. Dr. Islam has also been recognized as a VLIR-UOS Fellow in 2012 at the University of Antwerp, Belgium; an ACRC Fellow in 2013 at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; a DRF Fellow during his PhD program at the School of Knowledge Science, JAIST-Japan (2013-2016); and an ACU Fellow in 2016 at the University of British Columbia, Canada.

IFLA Green Library Award 2023: Call for Submissions

Applications are invited for the IFLA Green Library Award for 2023.

Objectives of the IFLA Green Library Award

  • To reward a Green library / Green library project that best communicates a commitment to environmental sustainability
  • To create awareness of libraries’ social responsibility and leadership in environmental education
  • To support the worldwide green library movement, concerned with
    • environmentally sustainable buildings
    • environmentally sustainable services, activities, programming, information resources, collections and projects
    • conservation of resources and energy
  • To promote the development of green library initiatives locally, regionally and worldwide
  • To encourage all types of libraries to actively present their green activities to an international audience

In line with IFLA Key Initiative 1.1: Show the power of libraries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the award helps to advance the profession through illuminating the role of libraries and librarians in the advancement of sustainability standards and the promotion of specialized knowledge within professional practice.

The prize is awarded in two categories:

  • Category 1: Best Green Library/Grand-Scale Project
  • Category 2: Best Green Library Project

A special recognition may be given to a project that was carried out with minimal resources but has a significant impact.

ASIS&T Announces 2021 Award Winners: Winners of Prestigious ASIS&T Awards to be Honored in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) has announced the winners’ names of the different ASIS&T Awards for 2021.

Researchers, practitioners, and academics in the field of information science and technology eagerly await the announcement of the winners of the renowned ASIS&T awards, which are among the oldest and most prestigious honor in the still-evolving field of information science and technology. Winners are usually announced immediately before the ASIS&T Annual Meeting, after a lengthy nomination and jurying procedure. They are then formally presented at the meeting during the annual awards luncheon.

In this year the ASIS&T Annual Meeting will be held in October 29 through November 3, 2021, in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

Shah Abdul Kabej wins TLT Excellence Academic Librarian Award 2021 (Academic Librarian of the Year Award)

The award selection committee of the Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB) has nominated Shah Abdul Kabej for “TLT Excellence Academic Librarian of the Year Award for 2021” to contribute toward the Arena of Academic Library in Bangladesh. The award includes a crest, 10000 BDT, certificate and gifts by the event sponsor. Recipients of the award will be invited to an event at the Department of Information Science and Library Management, the University of Dhaka in due course. 

He is currently working as Deputy Librarian at the Central Library of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Mr Kabej started his career as an Assistant Librarian at DUET in 1992 ad later in 2000, he joined his BUET and promoted to his current position. During this period, he was involved with numerous activities to make BUET Central Library a modern one. In 2003, institutionally, he registered the research4life and DOAJ, which was the first e-resources for the BUET Central Library. He also worked as a team member of the BUET Library to develop and customise the software named BUETLIB, which was established until the KOHA implementation. As a Sub-project Manager of HEQEP (2nd Phase) titled “Digitisation of the Central Library of BUET,” he played a vital role in establishing the RFID systems and digitisation systems in the BUET Library. Besides, the has played a crucial role in being a member of LiCoB (BIPC) in the year 2007 and set up the systems which is a big e-resource of BUET Central Library.
